What is The Docent’s Eye?

The Docent’s Eye (TDE)™ is a multimedia platform for the enjoyment of historical and contemporary art and artists with a focus on art narratives that have been marginalized in the western art history canon. All TDE content is written, produced and hosted by veteran museum docent, artist and filmmaker, Sasha Sinclair.

The mission:

  • To (re)introduce audiences to historical and contemporary visual art with an emphasis on reclaiming the histories of artists whose contributions have been overlooked, misunderstood or minimized in a way that is accessible to anyone regardless of previous art history knowledge

  • To tell the story of art in the context of the social, political, religious, and technological influences their creation and how these aspects shape narratives and their impact on the viewer

  • To support art lovers’ continued exploration of art that inspires a lifelong inclusion of art in their daily life.

About Sasha Sinclair

Sasha Sinclair is a multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker and art historian. She began her creative career as a fashion designer and illustrator.  After working in fashion for over 20 years, she closed down her design studio but kept drawing and painting fashion illustrations. Friends took notice and encouraged her to show her work. She continued drawing and painting until she was able to show her first collection of paintings in a solo show which sold out immediately. Since then her art has been shown in several solo and group exhibitions in and around Washington, DC and have found homes in many private collections.

Sasha’s art practice has evolved from abstract oil and watercolor paintings to include works in mixed media collage, textile, embroidery, and video art. Sasha has been awarded grants by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities to support her art making and to produce arts education videos and publications in Washington, DC and artistic exchange between DC and sister city, Paris, France.

Since 2007 she has served as a volunteer Docent at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC where she has presents public and special appointment tours of the museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions.  This work has led her to being commissioned to give lectures, and writing workshops inspired by art at Georgetown University, the Louvre, Musee D’Orsay, and other cultural institutions in the United States and France.
